Antique Books

Last Sunday I was helping my grandson and his girl friend
on their stall at a vide grenier / brocante fayre.
I haven't been to one of these for a long time
I always come back with something
I don't really need.

But since living in France I can't resist old books.

This one took my fancy.
full of pictures.

showing the beautiful architecture of the Paris buildings.

These two little gems, look like they have been well read.
Vintage French Literature School books.
I love the covers on them,
I don't remember my school books looking like these.

BOOKS... books.. books. I couldn't resist these.
most of the books I now read, I read as e-books on my Kindle.
But I must admit I do love turning paper pages .

Look at the date of this one

 The title translates to...
'The Wise Women '
Although they probably won't be read,
They'll be part of my décor in the guest blue bedroom.

Books, letters, printed photographs
they are all slowly becoming things of the past.
We are told it's the way of life,
 new technology slowly sneaking in.

How do you feel about this.

à bientôt
Barbara Lilian

  1. Just TODAY I was leafing through an old Les Fables De La Fontaine!
I too love old books..the Paris one is something!

Seems like most ..many of my mom's old books are from la Librairie Hachette..I know my Comtesse de Ségur ones are:)

  2. I love books, too. I don't think books will be replaced for a very long time. I've read that the sale of e-readers has leveled off, and that more real books than ever are being sold. The tactile nature of holding a book and feeling the pages just can't be beat. That said, I've just started reading on my tablet in preparation for our trip to Europe. It will be so much easier than hauling books around! Your book finds will add a lot of character to your guest room.

  3. Something magical happens to pick up a book, see the date 1887 . . .
And handwriting in the corner . . .
    Treasures for sure . . .
Just yesterday I mentioned these changes in a letter I wrote to my brother
who isn't technology savvy at all.
Printing photos from the iPad and phone, camera too
is the only way he sees pictures of his nieces/nephews . . . greats too.
Hand written letters and cards are our norm for one another.
Certainly it is becoming obsolete for most.
It has become the norm to hand someone a phone to share a photo or
tap off a few words in a quick email message or text.
I waver in the middle enjoying a hand written letter, card to
realizing the importance of knowing the technology of today
lest losing touch and communication with loved ones.

  4. I can't resist browsing the old books at our local vide greniers, there's always a little gem to be found. I have a stash in my work room waiting for re-purposing given to me by my neighbour who has just given up selling second hand 'treasures.' Ebooks are brilliant for traveling but give me a real book to read and especially an art picture book and I'm in heaven! What a lovely find that Paris book was!

  6. Old books, old photos and old letters are a link to the past in a way that digital equivalents can never be. Even digital research is made more meaningful when one finds a copy of an old handwritten letter..

  7. These old books are great, Barbara. Old books are such treasures, and Nel has a whole library of books in her study. I must get back to reading, my friend. It's been awhile since I read a good book.

    Have a lovely weekend.

    love, ~Sheri

  8. These are beautiful old books Barbara and I especially like the one with the drawings of Paris buildings. That type of art work always fascinates me and I could study the drawings for hours. Old books have so much character don't they. Have a wonderful weekend. Pamela

  11. Dear Barbara I adore old books and turning the pages. I have a Kindle but I still choose to read a book the old fashion way. I know technology is progress but there seems to be something lost when physical books and periodicals become a thing of the past. So enjoy those lovely antique books friend. Hugs!

  12. You have some great finds and I especially love the first one with the illustrations and maps. I love books of all kinds and hope they never fade away! Letter writing is a lost art, I'm afraid. Most people either pick up the phone or text or email these days. Thank you for coming by my blog! Have a great week!

  13. Hi Barbara! I love seeing your beautiful header pictures. France seems so effortlessly beautiful. I love the book stalls in Europe. Love old prints. But I mostly love the aesthetic of books and pages. With all the changes I just end up feeling old! haha! But old is okay. You found some delightful stuff!
